Gundam Calibarn?) is a Mobile Suit introduced in Mobile Suit Gundam the Witch from Mercury. It is piloted by the series' protagonist, Suletta Mercury.

Characteristics

Unlike other Gundam-type Mobile Suits, the Calibarn does not have filters to reduce the feedback from GUND-Format data storms. However, it is capable of maintaining a higher Permet score at the same Permet level.

  • Shell Unit

A control terminal that allows the transmission and processing of large amounts of information between the pilot and the machine. It emits light when the GUND FORMAT's operating level reaches a fixed intensity, such as when using GUND-BITs. Operating at Permet scores up to 5 emits red light, while Permet scores of 6 and above emit blue light.

  • Bit on Form

By connecting the Bit Staves to hardpoints throughout the machine, not only is it possible to quickly replenish electrical energy and propellant for the Bits, but it also improves the mobility and defensive performance of the Mobile Suit itself.

  • High Maneuverability Form

When the Calibarn mounts its main cannon, it can fly faster. Another function in its legs, the thrusters, open to reveal additional boosters that increase its mobility.

Armaments

  • Beam Vulcan: Two firing ports are built into the forehead. These are rapid-fire, low-power beam-type weapons used to slow down enemy movements, damage equipment, etc.
  • Escutcheon: A versatile offensive and defensive platform composed of a next-generation remote-controlled weapons system known as the "GUND-BIT," which uses the GUND FORMAT to organically link humans and machines. It has anti-beam properties.
  • Bit Stave: Each bit (Bit Stave) can be detached for use as a mobile turret with built-in cannons or as a shield.
  • Variable Rod Rifle: A long handheld weapon and the Calibarn's primary armament. On its rear is a propulsion unit consisting of four Quadra thrusters, which can also be used to propel the Calibarn itself.
  • Beam Saber: A close-combat weapon that emits a beam blade through the connection with the handle's sensors. The mount swings forward when it emerges from the mounting rack on the back.

History

A Gundam-type Mobile Suit developed in competition with the XGF-02 Gundam Lfrith, the machine's lack of features to ensure

pilot safety from the GUND format meant that the Lfrith was ultimately chosen as Och Earth's primary Gundam, and all development records for the Calibarn were subsequently deleted. The Calibarn was later seized by the Space Assembly League during the Vanadis incident, where it was called a "monster" due to its lethal characteristics.

The Calibarn would be piloted by Suletta Mercury to confront Ericht Samaya and Prospera Mercury, who planned to use Quiet Zero to take control of the Earth Sphere. After the Space Assembly League's interplanetary laser transmission system heavily damaged the Gundam Aerial Rebuild, Suletta, together with Ericht, commanded the GUND-BITs with the Calibarn, while also taking control of the Gundam Pharact and Gundam Schwarzette to create a data storm powerful enough to remotely shut down the interplanetary laser. The resulting data storm would eventually

disintegrate all nearby machines using the GUND format, including the Calibarn.

  • The name Calibarn refers to Caliban (a half-monster enslaved to Prospero) in Shakespeare's The Tempest and the legendary sword Caliburn from Arthurian legends.
  • The EX in its model number, combined with its name, is likely a reference to the more famous sword in Arthurian legend, Excalibur.
  • The design of its main weapon is a direct nod to the series' title "Witch."
  • The Calibarn's design has many commonalities with the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam; both are white, and the Calibarn's colored parts evoke the colored parts beneath the Unicorn's armor in Destroy Mode.
