The MGEX 1/100 ZGMF/A-262PD-P Mighty Strike Freedom Gundam from Bandai Spirits represents one of the most ambitious achievements ever offered in the Gunpla line. As the third model in the prestigious Master Grade Extreme (MGEX) collection, it brings to 1/100 scale the ultimate evolution of Kira Yamato's Mobile Suit from Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM, featuring its spectacular Proud Defender and a level of finish specifically developed for this high-end edition.

The MGEX line is not simply about offering a more complex Master Grade: each model is developed around an "Extreme Point", a specific technical theme that Bandai Spirits seeks to push to the maximum through its expertise, various molding processes, and specific materials or treatments. After the luminous expression of the MGEX Unicorn Gundam and the metallic expression of the MGEX Strike Freedom Gundam, this third MGEX adopts the theme of "the ultimate expression of radiance."

A new high-end benchmark for radiance

To achieve this goal, Bandai Spirits introduces Mechanical Core Plating, used here for the first time in Gunpla history on colored plastic parts. This process enhances the impression of depth, reflection, and brilliance of the elements concerned, so that the different layers of the structure visually react to light.

This pursuit is not limited to a few shiny parts. The gold parts benefit from an entirely revamped treatment combining several types of gold plating, Extra Finish elements, and Real Metallic Gloss Injection technology. The combined use of these different finishes allows for several shades and textures of gold instead of a uniform hue, highlighting the mechanical complexity of the Mobile Suit.

An internal structure derived from the MGEX Strike Freedom

The Mighty Strike Freedom is based on the impressive structure of the MGEX Strike Freedom Gundam. This structure had introduced the largest number of frame-linked articulation mechanisms ever used on a Master Grade. When the limbs are moved, several internal elements and certain parts of the armor naturally accompany the model's movements.

However, Bandai did not simply reuse this structure: several elements are newly sculpted to reproduce the Strike Freedom Gundam Type II and its Mighty Strike Freedom configuration. The result thus combines an already particularly sophisticated mechanical architecture with new parts specific to the version appearing in Gundam SEED FREEDOM.

The Proud Defender, Mighty Strike Freedom's signature

In Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM, the Mighty Strike Freedom is born from the combination of the Strike Freedom Gundam Type II with the Proud Defender. This back equipment radically transforms the Mobile Suit's silhouette by replacing the traditional wing system of the Strike Freedom with a gigantic white, gold, and luminous structure.

At 1/100 scale, the Proud Defender naturally plays a central role in the model's visual presence. It complements the MGEX approach based on radiance and contrasts with the Gundam's complex gold frame, creating a display piece significantly more imposing than a conventional Master Grade.

The Futsunomitama and Gundam SEED FREEDOM armaments

The kit includes the spectacular Futsunomitama, the Mighty Strike Freedom's characteristic anti-ship sword. Its long blade and very particular Japanese design offer a radical alternative to the beam weapons traditionally associated with the Strike Freedom and allow for the reproduction of the film's most striking close combat scenes.

The MGEX also includes the Prototype Type-35 Kai Railgun as well as the Mobile Suit's more classic equipment: two Beam Rifles, two Beam Sabers, and an effect for the forearm-mounted Beam Shield.

The Disruptor reproduced in deployed configuration

One of the most important features of the Mighty Strike Freedom is its Disruptor, a weapon integrated into the Mobile Suit's head. Bandai Spirits provides a specific interchangeable part to present the system in a deployed position and reproduce this characteristic configuration from Gundam SEED FREEDOM.

Kira Yamato and Lacus Clyne integrated into the staging

The work done on the cockpit goes particularly far for a 1/100 Gunpla. The model is designed to allow the installation of Kira Yamato and Lacus Clyne figures, reproducing their joint presence aboard the Mighty Strike Freedom.

A Lacus figure specifically for the Proud Defender is also provided. Bandai Spirits even adds a standing Lacus Clyne, which can be positioned on the Gundam's torso to recreate one of the film's iconic scenes. These elements give the kit a staging dimension particularly unusual in the Master Grade line.

MGEX: a premium building experience

The philosophy of Master Grade Extreme relies as much on the final result as on the assembly experience. The construction gradually highlights the golden internal structure, articulated mechanisms, and multiple finishes before the armor and Proud Defender are installed.

The model is designed according to Bandai Spirits' Snap-Fit principle: no glue is needed for standard assembly, and the main colors are obtained directly through molded parts and various surface treatments. Its complexity, the number of parts, the numerous mechanisms, and the specific finishes nonetheless make it a Gunpla clearly intended for enthusiasts seeking an advanced assembly experience and a true collector's centerpiece.

About Gunpla and Plamo

Gunpla (Gundam Plastic Model) and Plamo (Plastic Model) refer to the famous Japanese assembly models, which have become an essential reference for model-making enthusiasts, science fiction fans, and Japanese culture aficionados. Popularized by Bandai's Mobile Suit Gundam license, Gunpla now includes hundreds of models inspired by the most emblematic Gundam series, films, and universes.

Beyond Gundam, the world of Plamo brings together many ranges produced by renowned manufacturers such as Bandai, Kotobukiya, Good Smile Company, Max Factory, Wave, and Aoshima. Robots, mechs, characters, creatures, vehicles, or original universes, Japanese model kits offer an assembly experience accessible to both beginners and experienced modelers.

Most modern kits are designed to be assembled without glue thanks to a high-precision snap-fit system. Depending on the range, models can also offer advanced articulation, interchangeable accessories, visual effects, decals, and numerous customization possibilities using paint, panel lining, or modeling tools.

Among the most popular ranges are Gunpla Gundam, the RG (Real Grade), MG (Master Grade), HG (High Grade), PG (Perfect Grade) series, but also the 30 Minutes Missions (30MM), 30 Minutes Fantasy (30MF), Figure-rise Standard, Moderoid, Frame Arms, Hexa Gear, Megami Device universes, and many other references from the world of Plamo.

Whether you're looking for your first Gunpla, a collectible Gundam model, or a more technical Japanese model kit, Plamo is a fascinating hobby that combines construction, creativity, collecting, and display through increasingly detailed and innovative models.

Gunpla & Plamo FAQ

Do you need glue to assemble a Gunpla?

Most modern Gunpla and Plamo are designed to be assembled without glue, thanks to an interlocking parts system.

Should you paint a Gunpla?

No. Bandai kits and most Japanese models are molded in colors close to the final rendering. Painting remains optional.

Which Gunpla should I choose to start with?

HG (High Grade) and Entry Grade lines are generally the most accessible for beginners assembling Gundam models.

What is the difference between HG, RG, MG, and PG?

Grades correspond to the level of detail, size, and complexity of the kit. HGs are the simplest, while PGs represent the most detailed models.

What is a Plamo?

The term Plamo is a contraction of "Plastic Model" in Japan. It encompasses Gundam Gunpla as well as many other models produced by Bandai, Kotobukiya, Good Smile Company, and other manufacturers.

How long does it take to build a Gunpla?

Depending on the model, assembly can take between one hour for an Entry Grade and several tens of hours for some Master Grade or Perfect Grade models.

What tools are recommended for assembly?

A hobby side cutter, a precision knife, and files or abrasives are the most commonly used tools to achieve a clean result.
