The term Gunpla refers to the plastic models of mechs, characters or vehicles from the Japanese Gundam franchise, marketed by Bandai; it is a contraction of "Gundam plastic model". It first appeared in 1980.

All Gundam models are characterized by two essential properties:

- the parts are interlocking

- and they are molded in color.

Gunpla are categorized into ranges (called "grade") based on their quality and/or size.
