The MGSD ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam from Bandai Spirits is the very first model in the Master Grade SD (MGSD) line. From Mobile Suit Gundam SEED and piloted by Kira Yamato, the Freedom Gundam inaugurates this high-end collection that condenses the engineering, internal structure, and level of detail of a Master Grade into the compact and stylized proportions of an SD Gundam.
With a height of approximately 115 mm, the MGSD Freedom Gundam is far from being a mere enhanced SD. Bandai Spirits has developed a true articulated internal frame to which the outer armor attaches, featuring numerous mechanisms designed to offer particularly advanced mobility despite the model's proportions.
A True Internal Structure Inspired by Master Grades
The core of the kit lies in a richly detailed inner frame, directly inspired by the Master Grade philosophy. This internal structure serves as both a mechanical skeleton and a support for the various articulation gimmicks. The frame parts use multiple shades to highlight mechanical details, even in areas partially visible once the armor is installed.
Bandai Spirits has particularly focused on head mobility. It uses three articulation axes allowing the chin to be lowered, the gaze to be raised, or the head to be slightly advanced, offering unusual expressiveness for an SD Gundam.
The torso also integrates several internal axes allowing for forward and backward tilting movements as well as lateral swinging. The goal is to maintain natural poses despite the very compact proportions of the body.
Mechanical Articulations and Synchronized Movements
The shoulders use a swing mechanism that increases arm range, while the forearms integrate an extension system allowing the elbows to bend further.
The legs benefit from an even more elaborate design. The thighs feature extension mechanisms, and when the knees are bent, the knee armor and the verniers located at the back move simultaneously. The feet also have articulated elements, particularly at the tips, allowing the Freedom Gundam to adopt natural kneeling positions despite its SD format.
Another mechanical gimmick appears at the shoulders: when a part of the armor is lowered, the verniers located under the shoulders deploy simultaneously. These small interconnected mechanisms strongly reinforce the impression of building a miniature machine rather than a simple articulated figure.
Fully Deployable HiMAT Wings and Full Burst
The famous Freedom wings naturally constitute one of the kit's highlights. The Wing Binders feature MGSD-specific extension mechanisms, while their connection points can also extend to increase the space around the body.
This design allows for effective reproduction of the spectacular HiMAT Mode as well as the Full Burst configuration, by simultaneously deploying the wings, plasma cannons, and Railguns without the different equipment interfering with each other.
The two MMI-M15 Xiphias Railguns mounted on the hips use a gear mechanism: when deployed, the front and rear sections move synchronously. The handles can also be used to reproduce their firing configuration.
The wings also integrate the two M100 Balaena Plasma Beam Cannons, which can be positioned forward to reproduce the Freedom Gundam's characteristic firing configuration.
Reflection Cut Technology in the Wings
The MGSD Freedom introduces Reflection Cut technology. The transparent parts placed inside the Wing Binders have a surface molded with multiple microscopic reliefs designed to efficiently reflect light.
This process creates light variations directly within the transparent parts, without the need for LEDs. The result enhances the depth of the wings and gives them a much brighter appearance when viewed from different angles.
Real Metallic Gloss Injection
Bandai Spirits also uses Real Metallic Gloss Injection technology on several elements of the kit. This process uses a specially formulated material to produce a metallic sheen directly in the injected plastic, without additional paint or plating.
Combined with the inner frame's details, this finish allows the visible mechanical parts to stand out better from the outer armor.
Cameras and Twin Eyes with Dual Structure
The head also benefits from particularly careful treatment. The main camera and Twin Eyes use a multi-layered construction: a richly detailed internal part is covered by a transparent part.
This superposition provides a real sense of depth to the sensors and avoids the flat appearance usually found on eyes simply reproduced by stickers.
An Outer Armor in Multiple Shades
To further enhance the visual density of the model, Bandai Spirits uses a two-shade separation on certain colors of the outer armor. This subtle variation differentiates the panels and accentuates the impression of mechanical construction without the need for paint.
Many details are also molded on the surface as well as on certain internal parts of the armor, including in areas rarely visible once the model is completed.
The Freedom Gundam's Complete Arsenal
The MGSD reproduces the emblematic armament of the ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam. Its arsenal includes the MA-M20 Lupus High-Energy Beam Rifle, the Freedom's characteristic anti-beam shield, and two MA-M01 Lacerta Beam Sabers.
The two Beam Sabers are stored on the sides of the waist and can receive the two transparent effect blades provided. The Beam Rifle can also be attached to the back of the waist when not in use.
In addition to these handheld weapons, the Mobile Suit directly integrates the two Xiphias Railguns mounted at the waist and the two Balaena Plasma Beam Cannons located in the wings, allowing for the recreation of the Freedom's famous Full Burst attack.

The Kit that Inaugurated the MGSD Line
The MGSD Freedom Gundam represents a very different approach from traditional SD Gundam. Its compact format conceals a particularly sophisticated construction combining inner frame, synchronized mechanical movements, extendable HiMAT wings, geared Railguns, Reflection Cut and Real Metallic Gloss Injection technologies.
With its impressive Full Burst configuration and the level of detail usually reserved for much larger Gunpla, it serves as an excellent introduction to the MGSD line as well as a particularly interesting collector's item for fans of Gundam SEED and the Freedom Gundam.
