The RX-160 Byarlant is a prototype high-mobility Mobile Suit introduced

in the anime Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam. It is piloted by Jerid Messa.

Features

In order for the Titans to firmly establish air superiority over Earth, the Byarlant was designed to possess autonomous atmospheric flight without the use of an external support system like the Base Jabber, or a complicated and expensive transformation system that was the trend at the time. It was also designed to intercept, at high altitude, enemy units descending from outside the atmosphere.

The Byarlant's flight capabilities were achieved by the incorporation of powerful thermonuclear jet thrusters into its shoulders and waist. By replacing jet thrusters with rocket thrusters, the Byarlant can be used in space. Due to the prioritization of flight systems, its offensive systems were lacking, and the unique design of its hands meant that the Byarlant could not use mass-produced weapons used by other MS, limiting it to its own pair of sabers beam and giant particle cannons mounted in his hands.

Armaments

• Mega Particle Cannon: Embedded in the Byarlant's palms, the two particle cannons are the machine's only ranged weapons. They are capable of rapid fire and have a power of 4.7 MW each.
• Beam Saber: For close combat, the Byarlant has a pair of beam sabers stored in the inner elbow, which can be removed during combat. The saber handles have a unique triangular section to match the Mobile Suit's clawed hands.

History

The Byarlant is an experimental Mobile Suit designed by the Titans during the Gryps Conflict in UC 0087. Jerid seized the incomplete Byarlant as his new personal MS during the Kilimanjaro skirmish. He used the

Byarlant to fight AEUG members, especially his rival, AEUG Gundam pilot Kamille Bidan. Despite its impressive performance, the Byarlant is defeated and Jerid moves on to other, more powerful machines. Later, three additional Byarlant units accompanied Reccoa Londe during Paptimus Scirocco's coup against Bask Om.

In UC 0096, the Earth Federation Forces modified two remaining Byarlants into the RX-160S Byarlant Custom and RX-160S-2 Byarlant Custom 02. Later that year, a third variant of the Byarlant, the RX-160G Byarlant Isolde, was used. by the private military organization Birnam.
