XXXG-01H Gundam Heavyams

The XXXG-01H Gundam Heavyarms (aka Heavyarms or Gundam Zero-Three)

is a Mobile Suit from the anime Mobile Suit Gundam Wing. It was the third of five Operation Meteor Gundams, and is piloted by a young man under the alias Trowa Barton.

Features

Created by scientist and Gundam designer Doktor S, the Heavyarms was developed in the L3 colonies under the financial support of the Barton Foundation. The Heavyarms is a long-range attack unit with a variety of built-in firearms. Its design is a combination of the firepower aspect of the Wing Gundam Zero with an emphasis on crushing suppressive fire. Its overall firepower is comparable to that of 3-5 battleships, but its attack power drops drastically once it runs out of ammo. However, thanks to circus performer Trowa's excellent piloting skills, the Heavyarms is capable of acrobatic melee combat.

  • Self-Destruct System

Like other Gundams, the Heavyarms was built to self-destruct if the pilot so chooses. A remote detonator is placed in the cockpit and if a serious situation happens, the pilot can destroy the Gundam. The system was designed to overload its power systems and has enough explosive power to destroy several city blocks. This is a last option tactic if the pilot is unable to protect the Gundam, without letting it fall into enemy hands. It can also be used as a large explosive device to wipe out large targets.

Armaments

  • Vulcan Gun: A pair of headshot weapons. Of low offensive power, used only to restrict enemy movement, and lay down a wall of suppressive fire due to their rapid fire capability.
  • Machine Cannon: Mounted on the Heavyarms' collarbone, Machine Guns have greater firepower than Vulcan cannons.
  • Chest Gatling Gun: A pair of Gatling Guns mounted in the left and right chest, they are hidden by openable armor covers. They can fire autocannons and Vulcan cannons to prevent enemy units from getting closer.
  • Homing Missile: Six Homing missiles are stored in the shoulders of the Heavyarms, they are fired at enemies with a lock-on.
  • Micro Missile: Two modules each containing twelve Micro Missiles are mounted on the legs of the Heavyarms.
  • Beam Gatling: A high powered beam type weapon that serves as the primary armament of the Heavyarms, it is worn on the left forearm and can be used for defense as it is equipped with a shield. A flip-up opening can be attached to allow the weapon to be supported by the right arm. It is mounted on the backpack when not in use. The added weight of the Beam Gatling can cause the Heavyarms to tilt to the left when in use. To reduce weight, the left forearm can be removed and the Beam Gatling attached directly to the left elbow. This was only done once when Trowa adjusted the Heavyarms for the rematch between Heero and Zechs.
  • Army Knife: A knife made of Gundanium alloy and attached to the right arm, it tilts forward when used. Despite its small size limiting its range, it has no problem cutting up enemy Mobile Suits.
  • Beam Saber: For the rematch between Heero and Zechs, Trowa not only removed the left forearm and attached the Beam Gatling directly to the left elbow, he also stored a Beam Saber in part of the internal connection connecting the gatling to the elbow. This weapon was likely borrowed from the Wing Gundam, having the same green blade. When the Beam Gatling runs out of ammo, it is dropped, revealing the Beam Saber stored inside, which is then used by the right hand. After the battle, this weapon was not seen again, implying that Trowa had restored the Heavyarms' left arm to its original state.

History

With financial support from the Barton Foundation, the Gundam Heavyarms was designed for use in the first Operation Meteor plan which involved a colony fall and "extinction level event" on Earth. The Gundam Heavyarms, along with its four companion Gundams, were to be used to control the ensuing chaos. The Gundam Heavyarms was to be piloted by the son of the head of the Barton Security Group, Trowa Barton.

The Gundam design teams, however, did not want their creations to serve as weapons of mass destruction, and decided to fight the war for the independence of the colonies in their own way. A new plan for Operation Meteor was initiated, the original Trowa Barton was killed, and an unnamed young Mobile Suit mechanic took over as pilot of the

Gundam Heavyarms, adopting the name of its former pilot.

The Heavyarms will participate with the other Gundams and in the attack on New Edwards, as well as that in Siberia. Trowa will lend his Heavyarms to Heero, in his revenge duel against Zechs Merquise. The Gundam will be saved by the Wing Gundam piloted by Trowa Barton.

As Operation Meteor escalated into a full-blown war between OZ and the five Gundams, it became clear that the battle would eventually move into space. Trowa then left the Gundam Heavyarms hidden on Earth while

he was heading towards space. Sally Po eventually discovered the abandoned Heavyarms and brought it into space, accompanied by Heero Yuy and his Wing Gundam Zero. After meeting the other Gundam pilots aboard the Peacemillion, Howard and his crew transformed the Gundam Heavyarms into the Gundam Heavyarms Kai for space combat.

Did you know?

  • The first design of the Gundam Heavyarms follows the nationality trend of Mobile Fighter G Gundam. The design of the Gundam Heavyarms was intended to be American with clown motifs. Some of these later projects also show his Gatling beam mounted behind his left shoulder.
  • The name Heavyarms can be translated from English to "heavy arms", mirroring his heavily armed arms.
  • In the manga adaptation, Heavyarms was involved in the battle at Sanc Kingdom and was equipped with beam cannons mounted on his backpack, and a bazooka-type weapon. It was never modified into Heavyarms Kai after being salvaged. Instead, he was equipped with a backpack-mounted beam cannon and an arm-mounted missile launcher until the end of the story.
  • Of the five Operation Meteor Gundams, Heavyarms is the only one that was never damaged badly enough to be disabled or captured.
